Egypt’s prosecutor general has ordered the detention of former President Hosni Mubarak for 15 days. Earlier his sons Alaa and Gamal have also been detained.

Mubarak stepped down in February after a popular uprising against his rule. Many people were killed during the protests by the police, and the prosecutor general is now investigating whether Mubarak ordered to open fire on the crowds. The former Egyptian leader is also facing allegations of corruption and abuse of power. His sons are facing similar allegations: Gamal, his younger son, used to be a high-ranking member of his father’s party and was believed to be Mubarak`s successor; his elder son Alaa owned his own business.

Mubarak, 82, was detained despite the fact that he had been remaining under house arrest in his residence in Sharm al-Sheikh. And this is where he is being questioned. Yesterday Mubarak was taken to hospital after reportedly suffering heart problems. Several years ago the former Egyptian leader underwent a surgery in Germany. Though his health details were never made public, somebody suggested that Mubarak might be suffering from cancer, which explains why investigators are being so active in questioning the ex-president.

Little has changed in Egypt since Mubarak`s resignation. A military council, which has been ruling the country since then, wants to calm down outraged people, says an expert in Oriental studies Sergei Demidenko:

“I think that Mubarak is being sacrificed, so to speak, to the population disappointed with his rule. The military council wants tensions to ease down and prepare to put their candidate for the September elections. The question is whether this will be good for Egypt. Meanwhile, as I see it, the situation in Egypt has not improved a bit, and new riots are quite likely.”

Now that the situation all across North Africa is far from stable, for world leaders Mubarak`s fate is obviously not a priority. They are busy trying to topple Muammar Gadaffi. Sergei Demidenko continues:

“Both the US and the Arab world have already put up with the fact that Mubarak is no longer the leader of Egypt. Since the uprising was staged by key figures of Egypt`s army and was orchestrated from the overseas, Mubarak`s resignation does not seem to be a tragedy for anyone.”

However, Sergei Demidenko thinks that all those people who currently have posts in the ruling military council, were once hired by Mubarak, and represent his regime. So they should better keep silent about Mubarak`s deeds otherwise their careers may be ruined.
