Laaska News April 22,2011
The Libyan authorities have started handing out arms from military depots to the country’s population in the face of a possible NATO ground operation in Libya, a government official was quoted by Reuters as saying on Thursday.
Musa Ibragim said that in many Libyan cities, detachments are being formed to respond to the looming ground troop intervention of NATO, and that each and every Libyan citizen may soon be equipped with small arms.
On April 20, the opposition National Council urged the West to arm Libyan rebels, not ruling out the emergence in Libya of Arab, Muslim and other “friendly forces”.
Earlier this day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of “serious repercussions” of a possible ground operation in Libya.
