NATO jets destroyed three howitzers of the pro-government forces overnight.

Turkey shuts down embassy in Libya due to insecurity

ANKARA, May 2 (Xinhua) — Turkey has temporarily closed its embassy in Tripoli, capital of Libya, due to escalating dangers there, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Monday.

The decision came after attacks on British and Italian diplomatic facilities in Tripoli at the weekend, following the death of Gaddafi’s youngest son Saif al-Arab and three grandchildren in NATO airstrikes on April 30.

“Our embassy has been evacuated because of the worsening security situation in Libya,” Davutoglu told reporters, noting that the ambassador and the embassy staff had traveled to Tunisia after the decision was made late Sunday.

However, the minister said it did not mean a halt of Turkey’s efforts to find a solution to Libya’s crisis.

The Libyan government on Sunday voiced regret over the attacks by some angry Libyans on several Western embassies and diplomatic facilities in Tripoli.

Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim said some Libyans, raging over the killing of one of Gaddafi’s sons, trashed and burned the British and Italian embassies and the U.S. consular department.

The United States and Britain evacuated its diplomatic staff at the start of the Libya crisis, while Italy had withdrawn its diplomats weeks ago before recognizing Libyan rebels based in Benghazi.

TUNIS, May 2 (Xinhua) — NATO planes were involved in an airstrike in Western Libya near the border town of Wazen, the Radio Mosaique reported on Monday.

The bombings, taking place on Sunday might, could be heard in the Tunisian town of Dhiba, a few kilometers away, prompted the inhabitants to flee the town to neighboring Remada town.

The radio report said that the Libyan side of the Wazen border post was currently deserted after the rebels fled to the mountain area surrounding the town.

Calm prevailed in the area Monday morning, and no fight was reported. On Sunday afternoon, forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi fired mortar shells damaging several houses in Dhiba, causing panic among the local population and the Libyan refugees.
