Somalia:UNICEF urges aid for children in Somalia
Laaska News July 30,2011

UNICEF has called on the international community to help children suffering from severe famine in southern Somalia. An estimated 1.25 million children in the east African country are in urgent need of aid.
The Somalia Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Rozanne Chorlton, released a statement on Friday.
It says the children of southern Somalia desperately need help and that too many have already died. Many others are at great risk unless urgent action is taken.
The UN says that, since March, eastern Africa has been hit by its worst drought in several decades.
Tens of thousands of people have died from malnutrition, and about 13 million others are in need of help.
The UN is appealing for urgent relief totaling about 2.5 billion dollars, but it has so far managed to raise only half that amount.
