Yemeni ruling party denies pressure on Saleh to transfer power - Xinhua

SANAA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — Reports that Yemen’s wounded president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is in Riyadh for rehabilitation, faces pressures by Saudi Arabia and the United States to transfer power were baseless, Saleh’s ruling party said Tuesday.

“There were no such international pressures to convince Saleh to stay on in Saudi Arabia for fears that he could be prosecuted if he returns to Yemen,” the ruling party’s spokesman Tarik al- Shami told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, a Saudi diplomat in Sanaa told Xinhua that “the Saudi government is trying to help the Yemeni ruling party and the opposition to reach a compromise through dialogue and hold early presidential elections.”

Saleh was discharged from a Saudi military hospital on Saturday after spending two months for treating burn injuries he sustained in a bomb attack on his presidential palace on June 3.

An opposition official said there has been no progress on reaching a settlement yet.

The veteran president, who has faced protests demanding an immediate end to his 33-year rule for seven months, vowed earlier that he would return to power to lead a national conciliation dialogue with the opposition.
