The president of the UN General Assembly says Libya’s National Transitional Council will likely soon replace the government of ousted leader Muammar al-Qadhafi as the country’s official representative to the world body.

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser of Qatar took over the presidency of the General Assembly on Tuesday. He told reporters later in the day that a committee to discuss Libya’s representation will likely approve the transition as all of its members recognize the NTC, including China and Russia.

The transitional council has asked the UN to represent Libya in place of the deposed Qadhafi government whose solid-green national flag is still hoisted at the UN headquarters in New York.

Once the change is approved, the NTC will be given a chance to make an address at the General Assembly next week.
