Greece has put together a coalition government led by the prominent economist and academic Dr Lucas Papademos. There are three parties in the line-up, the Socialists, the New Democrats and the People’s Orthodox Union.
The Socialist politician Evangelos Venizelos, who negotiated the terms of the international rescue package for Greece, retains his positions as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister. Stavros Dimos of the New Democrats takes the foreign affairs portfolio, and his party comrade Dimitris Avramopulos becomes Defence Minister.
The new Cabinet is expected to push through the austerity measures demanded by the European Union, the European Central Bank and the IMF in exchange for rescue funds and debt relief. The package was agreed at the latest summit of the nations in the Eurozone on October 26th.
