Two massive explosions have occurred at an ammunitions depot in a military base outside the Iranian capital, Tehran, killing 27 people, including soldiers.

Several Iranian media outlets reported that the blasts took place on Saturday at a base of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards in Alborz Province, about 40 kilometers southwest of Tehran. Many others were reportedly injured.

Iran’s state-run television quoted a Revolutionary Guards spokesperson as saying the blasts were accidental and occurred when weapons were being moved inside the base. But the spokesperson did not disclose the cause.

A resident of the town of Karaj told NHK that the blasts could be felt even at a point 15 kilometers from the base, with windows and doors shaking as if an earthquake had occurred. The blasts were also heard in the central part of Tehran.
