SYRIA:Assad supporters rally in Damascus

  Mass demonstrations are underway in Damascus and other major cities in Syria in a show of support for President Bashar al-Assad. Their participants condemn the ultimatum, brought against Syria on Saturday at an emergency meeting of the Arab League. Damascus is accused of reneging on an Arab initiative aimed at ending violence in the country.

  In addition, Arab countries intend to recall their ambassadors from Syria, and threaten the country with economic and political sanctions.

  The Ministers called on the Syrian army “not to participate in the killings of peaceful demonstrators,” and the opposition – to gather in the next three days in Cairo to determine a transition program.

  Damascus believes that the Arab League decisions are taken in violation of the organization’s charter. It was supposed to be unanimous; however, Yemen and Lebanon were against.
