The 18th African Union summit opened on Sunday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in the first such top-level meeting since the death of one of the organization’s founding fathers, Muammar Gaddafi.
The summit is to set up a free trade zone in Africa five years from now and discuss the situation in Somalia where a 10,000-strong AU contingent is helping the government’s battle with radical Islamists.
The participating leaders will also look at the security situation in Algeria, Niger, Mali and Mauretania, where terrorism is on the rise.
