Syria pulls off referendum

The Syrian government has reported a massively validating turnout for Sunday’s referendum on a new constitution which would enshrine multiparty pluralism. In Damascus, the report says, not a single violation of public order took place.

Russia has welcomed the referendum as an important step towards the political and economic reforms that were pledged by Syria. It has also called attention to the fact that the Syrians pulled off the referendum despite a difficult situation in their country.
