Syrian forces enforce calm

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Syrian security forces have successfully suppressed what the government describes as opposition attempts to derail the ceasefire, which took effect Thursday under Kofi Annan’s settlement plan.

Stone-throwing demonstrators who took to the streets in Damascus and other cities have been successfully dispersed. People in the capital and the country’s second city Aleppo have largely ignored calls by the Istanbul-based ‘Syrian National Council to occupy central squares.

In Hama, opposition activists pelted officers with smoke bombs. In Idlib Province, unknown hoodlums tried but failed to block a major road. In Aleppo, one police officer died and another was injured in a fire attack.
