Annan warns of civil war in Syria
Special UN envoy to Syria Kofi Annan says the country could descend into full civil war if the ongoing efforts by UN ceasefire monitors fail.
Annan met reporters on Tuesday in Geneva after joining a closed-door UN Security Council meeting via video link.
Annan said the international monitoring mission is the last hope for stabilizing the Syrian situation.
He said that although military activity in Syria has decreased somewhat, there are serious violations to the cessation of violence, and the levels of abuse are unacceptable.
Annan said he expects the situation to improve after all planned 300 observers are deployed in Syria by the end of this month.
Britain’s UN envoy, Mark Lyall Grant, told reporters on Tuesday that Annan may soon visit Syria for talks with President Bashar al-Assad and others.
