Annan calls for Syria national unity cabinet
UN – Arab League special envoy to Syria Kofi Annan has proposed creating a national unity government in Syria. According to him, this cabinet could include both representatives of the present authorities, as well as the opposition, reports Reuters, citing a source in diplomatic circles.
In the words of the diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, “this national unity cabinet could include government and opposition members but would exclude those whose participation would undermine it, complicating transfer of power, or the process of reconciliation and stability.”
Kofi Annan’s proposal, according to Reuters, will be one of the main topics that Russia, the other four permanent Security Council members and key players in the Middle East will discuss at an international meeting in Geneva on Saturday.
