Russia welcomes an initiative made by Syria`s President Bashar Assad to announce a ceasefire in the country’s most restive areas, Russia’s deputy U.N. ambassador Alexander Pankin said following UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan`s report on the situation in Syria.
Mr. Annan said that Damascus was ready to accept a ceasefire in areas with the toughest clashes.
Mr. Pankin condemned arming of the Syrian opposition, adding that Russia is opposed to a UNSC draft resolution on sanctions against Damascus.
