‘Russia is part of Europe’ – Italian PM
Italy sees Russia as part of Europe and hopes its growing cooperation with the Russians will draw them closer to the European Union, as the latter continues to pursue its integration and modernization programmes.
Prime Minister Mario Monti spoke about this in Rome on Sunday ahead of flying to Moscow talks with his Russian counterpart Dmitri Medvedev and President Vladimir Putin.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti is in Russia on a working visit. First on his agenda is a meeting with Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill. This will be the first interaction between the head of the Italian cabinet and the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Mario Monti is in Russia on a two-day visit. On Monday he will be having talks with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, after which he goes to Sochi to meet with President Vladimir Putin.
According to the Italian media, Monti’s visit to Russia is called upon to strengthen relations between Rome and Moscow. New contracts are expected to be signed with Italian companies and groups. Preparations will likewise be made for the eighth round of Russian-Italian extended consultations, and an exchange of views held on various international issues.
