Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi has ordered the country’s parliament to return almost a month after a Supreme Court ruling dismissed it. The military council has called an emergency meeting to discuss the president’s move.

Cairo’s Tahrir Square has exploded in jubilation after the Egyptian Election Commission declared the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi the winner of Egypt’s run-off presidential elections held last weekend. He polled 51.7%. His defeated rival, former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq polled 48.3%.
Mr Morsi has already received congratulations from the country’s military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

The League of Arab States has offered an influential Egyptian politician and former chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei to become the League’s special envoy to Syria, the Asharq Al-Awsat Arabic international newspaper reports.

Former Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzuri has been tasked with forming a new cabinet. The corresponding instructions were issued by the head of the ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.
