Alliance of Libya’s ex-interim PM leads landmark polls: electoral commission

TRIPOLI, July 9 (Xinhua) — Libya’s once interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril’s National Forces Alliance (NFA) took the lead in the country’s national congress elections with over 50,000 votes in three constituencies, according to the initial results announced Monday.

Acts of sabotage, mostly in the east of the country, prevented 101 polling stations from opening on Saturday in Libya’s first post-Kadhafi election, the electoral commission’s chairman said.

Benghazi election commission building destroyed

In Benghazi, a group of armed men seized the building, which houses the Department of Libya’s election commission. According to Reuters, the attack was committed by those fighting for the autonomy of eastern Libya.
