N Korea – Heavy rain in North Korea kills 169

The UN World Food Programme has announced plans to provide emergency food aid to flood-stricken North Korea.

Heavy rain since mid-July has caused flooding in the western province of South Pyongan and elsewhere.

News from Rebels – Syrian checkpoint controlled by rebels

Rebels in Syria have taken control of a checkpoint in Salama, a northern town on the border with Turkey.

Salama is about 65 kilometers north of Aleppo, where a fierce battle between the government forces and rebels continues.

Torrential downpours continue to drench Japan’s southwestern region of Kyushu. At least 22 people are dead and another person is in critical condition. 8 people are missing in Kumamoto, Oita and Fukuoka prefectures in what weather officials say is unprecedented heavy rain.

Japan to focus on small firearms at Africa summit

Japan will make controlling small firearms the focus of a summit of African countries planned for next year.

The event will take place in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, in June 2013. It will include discussions on improving the control and disposal of small firearms in the region.
