Russia rejects UN sanctions against Syria

Russia will not support a draft resolution brokered by the UN Security Council that authorizes sanctions against Syria if it fails to stop violence, the first deputy of the Russian envoy to the UN, Alexander Pankin said on Wednesday.

EU to ask for UNSC resolution on Syria

The European Union is to ask the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution imposing sanctions on Syria.

The EU plans to make the request in a statement to be adopted at this week’s EU summit.

EU OKs new sanctions against Syria

The EU has slapped the 14th round of sanctions on Syria, Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency reported on Monday, adding that a decision to this effect was made during the EU’s ministerial meeting in Luxembourg earlier in the day.

The EU summit has confirmed that in March it will consider a new package of sanctions against Syria.

The EU will intensify pressure on the regime until repression against the opposition and human rights violations are stopped said a joint statement released by European leaders.

27 EU foreign ministers agreed Monday to increase sanctions on strife-torn Syria, AFP cited an official EU announcement as saying.

The new package of sanctions includes restraints on Syria’s Central Bank and airlines.
