A landslide has killed at least 10 people and left 40 others missing in the southern Philippines.

Mud poured into a village in the Compostela Valley province on the island of Mindanao on Friday.

The landslide hit an illegal gold mine and buried houses at the foot of the mountain.

The Philippine military and local police say 10 people have been confirmed dead so far.

Military and police units are using an earth mover and continuing search and rescue operations.

The mining tunnels were excavated without government permission.
Sources say heavy rain on Thursday night may have loosened the ground, triggering the landslide.
