ROME, May 8 (Xinhua) — A boat carrying about 300 migrants was stranded in waters off the southern Italian port of Lampedusa on Sunday and many of them were thrown overboard, but eventually all the migrants were safe, Italian media reported.

The boat seemed at first to be heading for Malta but was escorted by a Maltese patrol ship toward the island of Lampedusa, according to the official ANSA news agency.

The boat hit rocks and ran aground when it was approaching the Italian port and many of those aboard jumped into the sea out of panic, it said.

Italian rescuers responded quickly to the incident and eventually all the migrants were rescued.

Since the onset of the unrest in Mideast and North Africa, Italian ports have been receiving boats of migrants who fled war-torn Libya.
