SANTIAGO, May 19 (Xinhua) — The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Thursday it has launched a program aimed at eradicating foot-and-mouth disease in South America by 2020.

Under the initiative, owners of about 70 percent of all the livestock vulnerable to the disease in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, would receive support from the organization, it said.

The program include information campaigns, which will be followed up by veterinarian services to sustain actions if required.

FAO’s regional representative Tito Diaz said without the participation of the small farmers who account for the majority of livestock breeders in South America, it will not be possible to eradicate the disease there.
