MOGADISHU, June 19 (Xinhua) — Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Abdulahi Mohamed on Sunday announced his resignation in accordance with an agreement reached by the president and the speaker of the parliament.

The prime minister, who was under pressure to leave for the past days, made the announcement at a joint press conference with the Somali president following closed-doors meeting.

The resignation of the premier is the culmination of a bitter political row with the speaker of the parliament Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adam over how to deal with the ending mandate of the Somali federal institutions in August.

The Somali president and the speaker reached a deal this month in the Ugandan capital Kampala after talks to hammer out long drawn differences within senior Somali leaders over their expiring tenure.

The agreement in the Ugandan capital dubbed as the Kampala Accord stipulates among other things that after the resignation of the current Premier the President will name new Prime Minister who will have to form a cabinet that will have to be endorsed by the parliament.

Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, minister of planning and deputy premier was named as acting prime minister until a new one is announced by the president in the coming few days.
