MOSCOW, June 30 (Xinhua) — France’s arms supply to Libyan rebels, if confirmed, would be a crude violation of the UN Security Council resolution, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday.

Speaking at the State Duma, Lavrov said the Russian Foreign Ministry has asked French colleagues to confirm if the report about French arms sales to Libya was true.

“If this is confirmed, it is a very crude violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1970,” he was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying.

The UN resolution, adopted in February, imposed a comprehensive arms embargo on Libya.

News of France’s weapons delivery to the Libyan rebels emerged in a report by Le Figaro newspaper on Wednesday. The report said the weapons included anti-tank rockets and light arms.

The newspaper also said France, a leading force in the NATO operation in Libya, did not inform its allies about the move.

Paris said on Wednesday it had not violated the UN embargo because the weapons it airdropped to the rebels were needed to protect civilians.
