DUBAI, July 11 (Xinhua) — The United Arab Emirates (UAE) formally recognized South Sudan as an independent state Monday, the official news agency WAM reported.

“The UAE hopes that the declaration of the Republic of South Sudan will open a new page in achieving security and stability to serve the interests of the peoples of the region,” the Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying in a statement.

The Gulf nation is keen to bolster cooperation with South Sudan and to build close relations with the country in political, economic and social fields, the statement said.

The ministry also expressed good wishes for the new republic, its leadership and people for a prosperous and peaceful future, according to WAM.

Sudan has been battered by two civil wars over more than half a century. The later one, from 1983 to 2005, was the longest civil war in Africa.

During a referendum to decide the fate of unity or division of Sudan in January this year, nearly 99 percent of the voters approved the secession of the south from Sudan. The result was recognized by the Sudanese government and the international community, paving the way for the south’s independence on July 9.
