Libyan rebels have said that they have captured Marsa El Brega, a strategically important city in the east of Libya, the site of a major oil refinery.

According to the rebels, they have been fighting for the city for more than a week and occupied it in the small hours of this morning.

The rebels claim that the territory under control of the troops that are loyal to Muammar Gaddafi is shrinking, and the opposition is steadily approaching Tripoli relying on NATO air support.
