Libyan rebels have entered Muammar Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte, a spokesman for the rebel-led Transitional National Council (TNC) told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency on Thursday.

Visam al-Hamidi said that the town will be cleared of pro-Gaddafi forces in the near future.

The towns of Bani Walid and Sabha are still controlled by Gaddafi loyalists.

In another development on Thursday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron sat down for talks with TNC leaders in Tripoli.

Colonel Gaddafi’s current whereabouts are still unknown.
