In a phone call home Saturday from an Italian tanker held by Somali pirates, an Italian engineer complained about torture at their hands.

The captives are savagely beaten, starved, denied fresh water, tied up and forced to stay in awkward positions for several hours in the scorching sun.

The Savina Caylin was captured last February. The pirates say they will not release it before receiving $14 million in ransom.

The owners will only cough up half that sum.
