Two subway trains have collided in central Shanghai, injuring more than 270 people.

The accident occurred on the Number 10 subway line near Yu Yuan station on Tuesday afternoon.

The city government says 271 people were treated at hospitals, and 180 of them went home.

The Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai says 2 Japanese citizens suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Shanghai transportation authorities say more than 500 people were on board the trains.

They say the trains were running slowly due to technical problems on the line, and one of them rear-ended the other.
China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the signal system may have serious flaws, because an automatic braking device failed to work.

In July, a high-speed train crash in Zhejiang Province killed 40 people. A signal system failure is blamed for the accident.
