Russia and China have vetoed the UN Security Council resolution to introduce sanctions against Syria.

The resolution got 9 votes with 4 members of the UN Security having abstained.

If adopted the resolution would allow to sanction the regime of Bashir Assad unless it stopped oppressing Syria’s political opposition.

Russia believes the sanctions could trigger the Libyan scenario in Syria saying that the UN-approved military intervention in Libya exceeded its mandate of a peace operation.

Anti-government protests in Syria started in March this year. UN estimates say 2,700 civilians died as the result of clashes with the government.
