Much of Thailand remains underwater following weeks of torrential downpours and flooding.

The government said on Wednesday that the number of people who have died stands at 283.

The flooding has also seriously affected the country’s economy.

In Ayutthaya, about 100 kilometers north of Bangkok, 762 factories, including 200 Japanese companies, have been forced to halt operations since the flooding began.

Total financial damage will likely reach 940 million dollars.

There is growing concern that the flood waters could reach Bangkok and industrial parks around the city this week.

This has sparked panic buying by some local residents who are rushing to stock up on food and bottled water.

The Thai Commerce Ministry is monitoring the situation following a request by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for producers and shop owners not to raise prices.
