NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the military operation in Libya is nearly complete.

Rasmussen made the remark in an interview with NHK at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Friday.

He said the operation, which has been focused on air raids and which has lasted nearly 7 months, has been a great achievement in terms of saving lives. He added that the end of the operation is very close.

Regarding continuing resistance in Muammar al-Qadhafi’s hometown of Sirte in central Libya, Rasmussen called on loyalists to lay down their arms to prevent further bloodshed.

Referring to the military operation in Afghanistan, which has continued for more than a decade, the NATO chief said the process of transferring responsibility for the country’s security to Afghan authorities was begun in July. The transfer is expected to be completed as scheduled at the end of 2014.

Rasmussen expressed concern about insurgents recently becoming active in the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He urged Pakistan to step up its efforts to fight terrorism.
