The Thai capital of Bangkok is on high alert for flooding after record rainfall struck the region.

No major damage has been reported in central Bangkok, but people are on the alert Sunday with waterways at their highest levels since heavy rain began. Sandbags could be seen piled at subway entrances and in front of department stores. Residents also began stocking up on necessities.

The Chao Phraya River runs through the capital city. Its water level has risen to the top of the dyke due to a spring tide, inundating some houses around the estuary.

Floods have hit northern and central Thailand, killing 297 people. In the central province of Ayutthaya, flood waters inundated 4 industrial complexes, affecting about 330 Japanese firms.

Thai weather officials say that water levels will remain high for several more days and heavy rainfall is forecast to continue until the end of the month.
