Thailand:Bangkok braced for flooding

The Thai capital of Bangkok is on high alert for flooding after record rainfall the country.

In Thailand floods caused by the record heavy rains killed 297 people. In the central province of Ayutthaya, 5 industrial complexes have been inundated, damaging about 330 Japanese companies.

Heavy rain has been falling intermittently on Bangkok and a spring tide is causing high tides.

The central part of the capital has not been damaged but some areas along the river have been flooded.

A Japanese school with about 2,600 students has been closed since last week and it will be shut through Monday.

Visitors from Japan were concerned about the situation in tourist areas of Bangkok along the Chao Phraya River. One tourist from Japan said that she was surprised to see the river nearly overflowing.

The Thai meteorological agency says that heavy rain is expected to continue until the end of December.
