The United Nations says the world population will reach 7 billion on Monday next week.

In an annual report released on Wednesday, the UN Population Fund says the population has more than doubled in the past 50 years, from 3 billion in 1959.

The report says the figure is projected to surpass 10 billion this century.

The population of Asia — the world’s most populated region — is expected to reach 5.2 billion by the middle of the century. Africa’s is expected to more than triple, to 3.6 billion, in 2100. But developed countries, including Japan and European nations, are expected to see their populations go down, due mainly to falling birthrates.
The report says the global population increase will accelerate urbanization and spread poverty, mainly in developing countries.

It also says water shortages will worsen and that developed countries will have difficulty maintaining economic growth and social security systems due to their aging populations.

The report calls on governments to deal with the issues by drawing up a plan and investing appropriately.
