Flooding is spreading in Bangkok, with waters entering the Thai capital from the north.

City authorities closed floodgates on Tuesday in an effort to divert the encroaching waters to the east and west.

But the attempt was unsuccessful. The floodwaters have now inundated a greater area of the Bang Khen district 10 kilometers north of central Bangkok.

Residents are raking dirt from sewage ditches in order to improve drainage.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra issued an evacuation advisory for the zone.

Advisories have been issued for 7 out of Bangkok’s 50 districts.
