Greece’s Prime Minister George Papandreou plans to announce his resignation during a meeting with the country’s President Karolos Papoulias, local TV reports. He agreed to step down in favor of a new coalition government formed by the ruling PASOK leftists and the New Democracy party. The 3-day talks are not over yet.

The new government is to approve  austerity measures in exchange for the EU and the IMF loans and writing off the country’s vast debts.

The Greek Prime Minister, the leader of the ruling party George Papandreou and the chairman of the right-of-centre opposition party Antonis Samaras have reached an agreement on the formation of a new coalition government.

Papandreou will now have to meet President Karolos Papoulias.

Following that meeting, the President will hold talks with the party leaders and will then name the new Cabinet lineup.

Some of the likely candidacies for Prime Minister are the former CEO of the Central European Bank  Lucas Papadimas, Greece’s representative at the IMF Panagiotis Roumeliotis and the President of the European Court of Justice, Vassilos Skouris.
