The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit opened in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday evening with a dinner hosted by US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

Economic growth and employment in the Asia Pacific region are expected to be topics of discussion at the meeting.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda plans to convey to the leaders Japan’s intention to begin consultations with member countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership toward joining negotiations.

The leaders are also expected to agree on lowering import duties on environment-related products, such as solar panels, to 5 percent or lower by the end of 2015.

This is part of the “green growth” initiative aimed at balancing economic growth with measures to combat global warming.
