At a ministerial meeting of the European Union on January 30th, the UK, Germany and France will be pressing for a total lockout of oil supplies from Iran within three months.

Greece says it would have this cut-off date put back by another nine months. Italy and Spain, too, are reluctant to turn their backs to Iranian oil.

The proposed embargo would punish Iran for pursuing an alleged nuclear weapons programme.
