League of Arab States holds back new observers to Syria

Thursday, January 12, 2012

The League of Arab States has temporarily postponed sending a new group of observers to Syria after the recent incident when a convoy of cars with observers was attacked in Latakia on the Mediterranean. 11 people were injured in the Monday attack.

The monitoring mission led by Sudanese General Muhammad Mustafa Ahmed al-Dhabi began its work in Syria on December 26. At present, there are more than 160 observers in the country monitoring implementation of commitments made by the Syrian leadership to resolve the political crisis in the country.

By the end of the week, it was planned to enlarge the monitoring group to 200 people.
