Foreign tourists attacked in Ethiopia

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Gunmen have attacked foreign tourists in northern Ethiopia, reportedly killing 5 and kidnapping 4 others.

The mainly European visitors were attacked on Monday night near the Erta Ale volcano, a popular tourist attraction in the northern Afar region.

Local media say German, Hungarians and Austrians are among the 5 nationals killed in the incident. The 4 abductees are Germans and Ethiopians.

The Ethiopian government says it suspects that separatist militants backed by neighboring Eritrea masterminded the attack.

Ethiopia and Eritrea have been in conflict over their border since the 1990s.

The Erta Ale volcano has been active for more than a century, and many tourists and geologists visit the site to see lava lakes at the summit.
