French Senate committee opposes genocide bill

Thursday, January 19, 2012

The French Senate Law Committee has rejected a proposed bill stipulating a one-year prison term or a 45,000-euro fine for those who dare deny the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. Nevertheless, observers say the controversial bill may still win the senators’ approval at plenary session on Monday.

The bill’s passage through the lower house in December triggered an angry outcry from Turkey.

Ankara recalled its ambassador in Paris and suspended political and military contacts with France.
