There are reports that over 100 people have been injured. Most of the victims have already received medical treatment.

The epicenter of the earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, was located 10 kilometers from the city of Nishapur. In a number of settlements dilapidated dwellings were destroyed.

Iran is located in an area of high seismic activity. In December 2003, as a result of a magnitude 6.6 quake, the ancient city of Bam in the southeast was completely destroyed. More than 30,000 were killed in that quake.
