Washington will keep on imposing tougher sanctions on Tehran, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta said.

He added that the White House was also intended to keep 11 of its aircraft carriers on high alert despite defence budget cuts in order to be ready to repel possible threats coming from Iran.

Mr. Panetta stressed that the U.S. must demonstrate its strength in the Strait of Hormuz to pressure Tehran.

Following Tehran`s threat to close a vital oil -trade route in case the EU bans Iranian oil imports, the U.S. navy has been strengthening its forces in the area.
