Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has fiercely attacked his main Republican nomination rival Newt Gingrich over his work for a troubled housing mortgage firm.

The candidates appeared in a televised debate in Florida on Monday, about a week before the state hosts a primary to pick the Republican nominee.

Romney criticized the former house speaker for receiving a huge consultation fee from government-backed mortgage giant Freddie Mac. Romney said Gingrich made millions of dollars when people in Florida lost millions. The firm was partly responsible for the 2008 financial crisis.

Gingrich said he only advised the firm to help more people keep their houses, and that what voters want to hear is how the Republicans will defeat President Barack Obama.

In Florida, Romney had been leading by a large margin, but recent polls show Gingrich ahead after his South Carolina victory on the weekend.

Observers say the coming Florida primary may make the campaign a 2-man race between Romney and Gingrich.
