US President Barack Obama says he must win re-election to protect his country’s economic future.

In an interview with ABC News on Thursday, Obama said signs of a recovery are finally in sight, and he wants to stay in office to continue implementing his policies.

Obama’s economic program has been under attack from former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and other Republican presidential contenders.

Obama cited General Motors’ return as the world’s biggest carmaker as a sign of a moderate recovery of the US economy.

He went on to disparage the Republicans’ call for small government. He said he cannot understand why they want to bring back a policy that triggered the worst financial crisis in 80 years.

Obama is currently in the middle of a 3-day tour of 5 politically important states to win over middle-class voters.
