The EU urges the UN Security Council to take action to end violence in Syria, says a statement just issued in Brussels by the office of the Union’s president Herman Van Rompuy.

On January 27 Morocco, acting on behalf of the Arab League, tabled a draft resolution on Syria, which the Security Council is to take up later today.

Russia criticized the AL blueprint, which essentially calls for a power change in Damascus.

According to UN figures, more than 5,000 people – both civilians and police – have been killed in Syria since anti-government protests began ten months ago.
