A total of 56 people, including 28 civilians, were killed on Sunday in clashes between pro-government troops and protestors in various Syrian cities, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, RIA Novosti reported.

The London-based human rights organizations said only in the protest hotspot of Homs 23 civilians were killed during Sunday clashes. The violence also claimed the lives of 28 servicemen, the SOHR said. The information was not confirmed by official sources.

According to UN estimates, more than 5,000 people have lost their lives on both sides since the mass-scale protests flared up last March.
