Thousands of Touareg refugees fleeing clashes in northern Mali entered Mauritania in recent days, escaping the fighting between the Malian army and Touareg rebels from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azaouad (MNLA).

The number of those fleeing Mali for neighboring countries has doubled in the past ten days as the gunfights are spreading to ever new parts of the troubled African nation.

According to UN estimates, more than 44,000 Malians have found refuge in Mauretania, Niger and Burkina Faso.
